Can seafarers get a tax refund?

Yes, seafarers can receive refunds — if tax was deducted and SED (or another relief) shows nothing was due, or if you overpaid. The dangerous myth is that a repayment equals HMRC signing off the voyage history.

Pain

The refund hit the bank. That does not mean the SED file is closed.

Solution

We claim the right amount and keep the evidence so a later check does not reverse it.

How refunds arise

PAYE on a UK contract, emergency tax, or a first-year return after you become a seafarer. SED then reduces qualifying employment income. The repayment is a consequence of the return, not a separate ‘seafarer rebate scheme’.

Keep the proof

Airline tickets, hotels, passports, discharge book and North Sea midnight sheets should be kept indefinitely. HMRC can review a claim later.

This page is general information based on published HMRC guidance, not personal tax advice. Seatax will apply the rules to your sea service after you enrol. Fees from £275 including VAT per return.

Questions people ask

How long does a refund take?

After a correct return is processed. First-time UTR and agent codes take longer because of HMRC post. We cannot control HMRC’s timetable.
