Documents we need each year, plus the key dates for seafarer Self Assessment.

Useful information

Please find below a list of the details and documents which we require in order to complete and submit your tax return. Check through the list and send on details relevant to your own situation. Not all items will apply to you.

Please send photocopies or email attachments. Keep your original documents safe.

  • Update of sea service, including a clear copy of Discharge Book entries (including the inside front cover) or Discharge Certificates, qualifying tax night sheets, and if working in the North Sea, draught of water and freeboard sheets plus midnight position sheets showing precise dates of entering and leaving the UK or the twelve mile limit. Include office time between trips.
  • Dates of any leave spent abroad on holiday or training. Keep substantial proof of absence; you do not need to send it unless HMRC reviews the claim.
  • Pay and tax details: P60 or end-of-year financial statement, or payslips from April to March.
  • Benefits in kind or further job-related income: P11D, bond profit statements or similar.
  • If you receive a pension in addition to employment income (for example a forces pension), a copy of that P60.
  • Cadets or study leave: precise college attendance dates and whether you received full pay and/or specified income.
  • Changes of employer: start and finish dates and P45s or all payslips for each employment.
  • Unemployment: details of any benefits received.
  • Investment income: certificates of deduction of tax for savings and share dividend vouchers, even where interest was not taxed.
  • Private pension contributions: provider name and amounts paid between 6 April and 5 April.
