Do seafarers pay National Insurance?
HMRC’s employment income manual is blunt: SED is a deduction for tax. It does not apply to National Insurance. Whether you pay NI depends on residence, where the ship is registered, where you work, who pays you, and social security agreements.
Pain
Crew mix up tax-free SED with ‘no NI’. They are different systems.
Solution
We file the income tax return and SED claim, and we point you to the Seafarers NI helpline where NI is the issue.

Tax relief is not an NI holiday
You can have a valid SED claim and still have NI questions. The Seafarers National Insurance helpline is 03003 229464, Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm.
What still goes on the tax return
Even where there is no income tax on seafarer earnings, HMRC usually still want the income declared. We complete Self Assessment and the SED claim. NI queries are handled with the specialist helpline or your employer’s payroll.
This page is general information based on published HMRC guidance, not personal tax advice. Seatax will apply the rules to your sea service after you enrol. Fees from £275 including VAT per return.
Questions people ask
If I pay no tax do I pay NI?
Possibly. SED does not switch NI off. The answer depends on the ship, the employer and where you work.
Can Seatax calculate my NI?
Our core service is income tax and SED. We will flag obvious NI issues and direct you to the right HMRC seafarer NI channel.
